The De Hoop Foundation is a newly launched, registered non-profit organisation (NPO) dedicated to the long-term protection of the De Hoop Nature Reserve's unparalleled natural and cultural treasures, alongside fostering sustainable community development. As a proud initiative of The De Hoop Collection, a member of Cape Country Routes, this foundation marks a significant advancement in our commitment to South Africa's cherished landscapes and its people.
For decades, guests at De Hoop Collection have experienced the extraordinary biodiversity and rich history of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. From its iconic whale-filled coastlines and endemic fynbos ecosystems to its ancient archaeological sites and vibrant local communities, De Hoop represents an irreplaceable legacy. The establishment of The De Hoop Foundation ensures these vital assets are diligently protected, thoroughly researched, and passionately celebrated for generations to come.
The Foundation's Core Pillars and Purpose
The De Hoop Foundation consolidates all existing conservation, heritage preservation, and community development initiatives under one transparent and focused umbrella. This strategic unification enhances operational efficiency, strengthens collaborative partnerships, and enables purposeful investment into projects that directly safeguard the reserve’s natural and cultural heritage. It also provides critical support for the communities who call this extraordinary region home.
The true magic of De Hoop extends beyond its breathtaking landscapes. It resonates deeply within its people:
- Ancestral narratives: Stories passed down through generations.
- Nature's discovery: Children experiencing the wonders of the natural world for the first time.
- Passionate guides: Individuals finding purpose in sharing the reserve's marvels.
- Empowered communities: Local residents benefiting from meaningful support and upliftment.
The Foundation is committed to ensuring these invaluable human and natural stories continue to flourish.
How to Support: The Conservation, Heritage & Community (CHC) Fee
To directly support the Foundation’s critical work, a Conservation, Heritage & Community (CHC) fee of R250 per guest per stay has been introduced. This transparent contribution enables every visitor to play an immediate and direct role in sustaining the reserve's future and empowering its local communities.
The CHC fee directly supports four vital areas:
- Environmental Protection: Safeguarding De Hoop Nature Reserve's diverse ecosystems, from marine life to terrestrial fynbos.
- Cultural & Archaeological Heritage: Preserving ancient sites and historical narratives within the reserve.
- Community Upliftment: Investing in local initiatives that foster socio-economic growth and well-being.
- Education and Skills Development: Providing opportunities that empower individuals and communities through knowledge and vocational training.
All contributions flow directly into The De Hoop Foundation, ensuring responsible stewardship and long-term sustainability for both the environment and its people.
Leadership Perspective
"We are deeply grateful to every guest, partner, and friend who has walked this journey with us," remarked William Stephens of De Hoop Collection. "The De Hoop Foundation marks the beginning of a new chapter – one rooted in care for the land, our heritage, and our community. Together, we can carry this legacy forward into a sustainable future."
