GIRL POWER - INTERVIEW WITH PAYAL RAMLALL

Carrying on August’s theme of Women Empowerment, this week I’ve interviewed Payal Ramlall, a fellow blogger, model and law student (And also, a close friend of mine!). Also, be sure to check out my interview on her blog which you can find here.

WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE A FEMINIST

One of the things I've been reflecting on a lot during this women's month is all the amazing women I've met this year - a lot of them through blogging! One of these inspirational women is Dhanusha, a beauty blogger and computer science student from Cape Town.

This week we did an exciting, unique collaboration. I wrote a post on Dhanusha's blog about My Makeup Must haves (Surprise, surprise I'm actually crazy about make up!) and she wrote a piece on Feminism. Enjoy her blog post and be sure to check out mine on her blog!

Hi there!

I am Dhanusha, from the blog Miss Dhanusha, duh. My friends call me Dee, I call myself Alien and my readers’ weirdos. This is purely because I would to see us all embrace our “weirdness” that makes us unique. I am a Beauty & Lifestyle blogger with a strong opinion on certain matters. As much as I love all things beauty I love keeping up with current affairs and making a positive impact. Today that topic is feminism. Another feminist? Yes, I don’t hate men.

THE WOMEN WHO (LITERALLY) RULE THE WORLD

When you think of politics you usually think of old, balding men and while this is (unfortunately) mostly true, there are tons of women that are proving to pack quite a punch! In celebration of Women's Day, I researched Forbes list of 100 Most Powerful Women to find the women in politics who are changing the world one election at a time.

END GIRL ON GIRL HATE (BECAUSE, YOU DO YOU BOO!)

This is another collab with my fav girl blogger Indira from Indira's Inner Beauty! Head on over to her blog to see her post.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a firm believer in #girlpower. With those brows on fleek and your squad by your side you have no reason not to slay. Now the brows are the easy part, all you need are ABH dip brow and the real techniques brow brush and you're good to go girl! When it comes to your squad, not so easy. As pro-women and feminist as I am, I have to admit women are pretty notorious for being the more devious, conniving and backstabbing of the sexes. And you know what the worst part is - we've like that to each other

WHAT UP STALKER (LIFE UPDATE, QATAR, NETFLIX, WONDER WOMAN AND MORE)

WHAT UP STALKER! This week I have so much to tell you guys I figured I would dedicate a whole blog post to all the randomness. First, I had a super successful Guest Post month in May, where some amazing people wrote epic posts for the blog. I've also been contemplating making the biggest decision ever - changing the blog name! In the meantime I've been up to some fun stuff like writing a super personal blog post owww.indirasinnerbeauty.com. As you could guess, I've been on the edge of my seat with this whole Qatar - Gulf fiasco. Despite all of this, I've also found time for some Netflix and chill (Well, just Netflix minus the chill). So here you have it, everything all you stalkers wanna know summed up in one post!

As for me, well I recently finished exams and have a few adventures planned for July (winter vacay whoop whoop) so I'm going to be posting travel posts. Confession time: I've secretly always wanted to be a travel blogger/vlogger! I thought what better time to try it out then now. It's also an awesome opportunity for me to start vlogging.

GOT NO TIME FOR TERRORISM BRO

By Jayd Wollentine

In the age of insurgencies and infestation by extremist groups such as Daesh, Al-Shabaab, and others, nations around the world have had to resort to waiting until they become victims of a terrorist attack, and conducting retaliatory strikes against terror strongholds.

A TRIBUTE TO VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS

If you switch on the news (Wait, do people even own tvs nowadays? Where do you get your news updates? News24 app? CNN website? The Daily Show with Trevor Noah?) chances are you'll come across the words terrorism or terrorist.  Most recently the Manchester bombing (The suicide bombing in Manchester, England after an Ariana Grande concert on 22 May 2017. During her One Love Manchester concert on Sunday she raised $13 million for victims of the attacked and she slayed her performance of Over The Rainbow like a boss.) and the London attack (The terrorist attack that happened on 3 June 2017 where 3 men drove a van into pedestrians and stabbed Londoners in the Borough Market area) have made headlines.

While doing research to find out what to write for today’s post I came across some heartbreaking articles about recent terrorist attacks.

MELANIA, KEEP ON SLAPPING TRUMP'S HAND

Written by Indira Midha

If I could say just two words to Donald Trump, they would be “YOU'RE,” and “FIRED.” As a citizen of the United States of America, I am saddened by the state in which our country’s political atmosphere currently sits. An unqualified, disrespectful person holds the highest power over the government of this country. America, our president is somebody who mocked a journalist with a physical disability, and used the journalist’s disability as a reason to question their intelligence. America, our vice president is somebody who believes that you can electrocute the gay out of teenagers. What happened to “the land of the free, and the home of the brave?” These are words pulled from The Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem: an extremely traditional, and valuable song. This country is meant to be a place in which human beings can simply exist as human beings, and attempt to positively contribute to society.

CHEAP STUDENT FLIGHTS??? YASSS!

Do you know what's really annoying?  Seeing pictures on instagram of all these insanely beautiful, exotic places while you're busy studying for exams.

No seriously, Yas is a place and it's paradise!

HOW TO SLAY - NAMIBIAN STYLE

Monday, the 15th of May, was a big day for me - the day I could finally stop cringing when someone asked for my age and I had to end if off with "teen". I'm finally a twenty something (well twenty nothing technically). Cool, right? Tbh it's actually a pretty big deal for me. My excuse for everything in life up until that point was "I'm so young, it doesn't matter". Guess what Asha, it kinda matters now. I mean I'm still so young (I can't even legally drink in half of the world!), but now I don't feel like that excuse is valid anymore. I have no excuse not to have adventures. I have no excuse not to learn more. I have no excuse not to love more. I have no excuse not to get my shit together.

And most importantly, I have no excuse not to slay! This week one of the greatest Slay Queens if my life, has graced us with the ultimate guide to slaying - whether you're 20, 30 or even 102 (Yeah, we're gonna be bomb ass grandmas one day)!

LET'S GET HIGH IN THE PHILIPPINES (JK, PLEASE DON'T)

Happy belated World Press Freedom Day! World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. Speaking of Windhoek (No, not the beer!), we might be having a blog post about Namibia soon (Yes Elina, I'm looking at you). So often we take Freedom of Press for granted when so many journalists all around the world are being imprisoned and losing their lives for simply recovering the truth. Why are our voices still being silenced?  Did you know that Al Jazeera journalist, Mahmoud Hussein, has been detained in Eqypt for 141 days and counting? Yeah, that shizz actually happens in real life.

Anyway, it's time to get to this weeks blog post. We're still doing the guest post series where anyone who isn't Asha Singh can contribute to the blog (*sigh* I miss writing for you guys!). For this weeks opinion piece, we go abroad to a country I know very little about apart from the fact that it's definitely #travelgoals - the Philippines.

SOUTH AFRICA THIS IS WHO OUR NEXT PRESIDENT SHOULD BE (HINT: NOT ZUMA)

As a first year computer science major would say, Hello World. And more importantly, Hello May (My birthday month eeep!). This month we've got something exciting coming to LBAS (Because having an acronym makes me feel like I made it in life). Every week I'm going to publish an opinion piece written by a reader/friend/fellow blogger. These posts are a way to gain insight from different people, and remind us that my voice isn't the only one you should listen to for your weekly, worldly news update (And also because I'm too lazy to come up with new stuff after that long weekend tbh). So sit back, relax and enjoy a different take on LIFE (This time not by Asha Singh *sigh*).

HOW TO BREAK UP WITH HIM/HER (AND THE FRENCH ELECTION)

There comes a time when the initial honeymoon stage of the relationship ends (*sigh* it was nice while it lasted). Before you know it, the days of romantic dates, going out to restaurants with names you can't pronounce, getting bouquets of roses and chocolates and being treated like a Queen/King fade into a distant memory. That's when you know it may be time to let go. Easier said than done! The one thing harder than starting a relationship is ending one. Don't you worry, Life By Asha Singh is here to make your life easier.

SO YOU THINK YOUR 2017 SUCKS?

Ah, a new year. There's always so much excitement and hope around the prospect of a new beginning. New goals, new adventures, more happiness, less drama - that's exactly what 2017 is going to be like, right? Wrong. By this point in the year, however, reality kicks in and you realise it's probably not going to be a field of roses. You get back into your schedule and life goes on as per usual. What happened to 2017, this is practically 2016S (Non-iphone users will probably not get that. Haha, simpletons).

SOUTH AFRICA, IS THIS THE START OF A REVOLUTION?

revolution
rɛvəˈluːʃ(ə)n/
noun
  1. a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system.

If you've spoken to a South African in the past week chances are the topic of the day has been the recent cabinet reshuffle and junk status downgrade. Both of which suck big time.

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT - TRUMP EDITION

We all have those moments where we wish we had Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility to escape the awkwardness. Whether it's waving at someone you thought was waving at you but was actually just waving at the person behind you or pulling a door that says push or even when the waiter says enjoy your meal and you say "Thanks, you too!" (So much awkwardness, I can't deal!).

WHAT FEMINISTS DO FOR FUN

When we're not out fighting for the rights of minority groups all over the world we have normal lives like you. This is an inside look at what our friendly neighbourhood feminists do for fun on weekends.

VARSITY VS. SCHOOL

Broke, hungry and tired - 3 words that are practically synonymous with student life. In university you'll have to deal with eating noodles everyday, having your socks continuously getting stolen and being so hungover that you'd rather just die right there and then.  At times like these you'll reminisce over the good old school days when everything was so much easier. But was life really better? Here's the good, bad and the ugly on how student life compares to scholar life.

WHY BEING A WOMAN IS AWESOME

I woke up this morning and after pressing snooze 3 times realised what day it is - my second favourite day of the year (Well after my birthday that is)!

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY!

A (SLIGHTLY TIPSY) TAKE ON SOUTH AFRICA'S BUDGET SPEECH

Now I promise you I am 100% sober writing this, however you might not be for very long. Lets play a drinking game (Happy hour anybody?). Everytime I mention something negative about South Africa's future prospects based on the Budget Speech we'll both take a shot.

THE GUIDE TO A SUCCESSFUL FIRST DATE

Okay so he/she liked your meme and you got the courage to slide into the DM. An exchange of WhatsApp numbers and many "haha lol"s later and that long awaited message comes through "we should meet up and go for coffee sometime lol".  YAAAAAS you're in the game. Now here's what you've got to do to turn that coffee date into some Netflix and chill time.

WHY I HATE AIRPORTS BUT LOVE ROAD TRIPS

Ironically I'm sitting at departures at an airport while I write this post, but this reinforces why I would much rather be in a car with my best friends having a road trip right now.

WHY I LOVE MUSLIMS

With recent events such as President Donald J. Trump's "muslim ban" there have been lots of negativity from the western world towards followers of Islam. Our generation prides itself on being all about radiating them good vibes, so I thought I would share with you some of my favourite things about the Muslim (Particularly Arab) culture.

HOW TO HANDLE STUPID PEOPLE

And by stupid I mean sexist, racist and homophobic; the worst kind of stupid there is.

You know that guy that always remarks that you'll never get a boyfriend because you're too much of a feminist? Or those church friends that show disgust when they see two guys arm in arm? Even those times you were right in the middle of events that show the underlying institutional racism that we have eluded (or tried to, at least) all these years (*hint*, Shimla Park)?
