WHY I HATE AIRPORTS BUT LOVE ROAD TRIPS

Ironically I'm sitting at departures at an airport while I write this post, but this reinforces why I would much rather be in a car with my best friends having a road trip right now.

1. ROAD TRIPS GIVE YOU A CHANGE TO SEE THINGS YOU WOULDN'T OTHERWISE SEE OR EXPERIENCE

Cows crossing the street in herds in the Eastern Cape? The beautiful drakensburg mountains covered in snow? The cute little cafes in Knysna? The valley of desolation in Graaff Reinet? The little seaside town of Saint Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal? These are all things I've only experienced during road trips in our beautiful South Africa. Going on a road trip gives you the opportunity to take loads of instagram worthy photos and not just boring #airportselfies.

2. ON THE ROAD YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH LONG CHECK IN AND SECURITY CHECK LINES

Those crazy lines at check in and baggage drop are undoubtedly one of my least favourite things about airports. You're already late for your flight and yet you have to wait in a queue that spans from Cape to Cairo. I understand why the recent terrorist attacks have made heightened security in all airports necessary however they're still so annoyed and awkward. Why you gotta treat me like a criminal?

3. DELAYS

Sometimes I feel like airlines do this on purpose to ruin our plans. Do they not realize we actually made time specific plans for our holiday that delays always interrupt. How are you supposed to have breakfast at Tiffany's when you only reach New York at 3pm?  Not to mention your plane might mysteriously disappear without a trace like Malaysia Airlines flight MH370

4. DURING ROADTRIPS YOU AND YOUR BESTIES GET TO BOND OVER BADLY SUNG KARAOKE

What do you mean it's not "I've got a lot of Starbucks lovers"? You had us all fooled Taylor Swift. Singing at the top of your lungs to songs you barely know the lyrics to is more entertainment than you can ever get from a flight (Unless you're President Zuma and own your own private jet while your country has a crippling economy).

I would like to dedicate this post to the family's of victims aboard the missing MH370 plane. The search for the plane, which disappeared en route from Kuala Lampur to Beijing on 8 March 2014, with 239 people on board, was suspended last month.

  3. You have an amazing blog. I totally agree with you that road trips are much more enjoyable and exciting. They give you a chance to enjoy the beauty and architecture of the places that you pass by. You also get to meet diverse people and see cultures close by enough to do essay writing on them.
