Broke, hungry and tired - 3 words that are practically synonymous with student life. In university you'll have to deal with eating noodles everyday, having your socks continuously getting stolen and being so hungover that you'd rather just die right there and then. At times like these you'll reminisce over the good old school days when everything was so much easier. But was life really better? Here's the good, bad and the ugly on how student life compares to scholar life.
1. FOOD
If you're in varsity and don't eat maggie 2 minute noodles at least twice (more like 10 times) a week, are you even a student? For decades 2 minute noodles have been the staple food of students far and wide and an integral part of the college experience. There's no better reason to look forward to vac than thinking of your mom's cooking. Ahh home food, a luxury we all took for granted back in the school days. In school our cereal was on the table waiting for us in the morning, a neatly packed sandwich in our lunch box and the most delicious dinners to look forward to. Now we starve in the morning and consider a coffee from DCM at the Neelsie to be our lunch (Shoutout to Stellies). School definitely wins in this category.
2. CLASSES
One of the best thing about uni is the times of your classes; except when you have a 7am dawnie (Shoutout to Rhodes). Most times you can schedule your time table to have your classes start around 10am or even later. This gives you sufficient time to recover from that hangover you have from Wednesday nights kuier. Compare starting classes at 7:30 at school to starting after 10am at varsity - we have a clear winner. Another awesome thing about tertiary education is that you can study what you love and don't have to do unnecessary subjects (*hint* LO bruh). If you're like me then you'll miss having a variety of different classes and not just the ones related to your degree, fear not though most of the time you can take lots of electives in different faculties - however you probably won't have enough time to take extras, because, you know, Anyway varsity equals no P.E so varsity definitely wins this category.
3. SOCIAL LIFE
Now I say this so often. In school we're so limited in the people we associate with and very often we're only really friends with people because we see them everyday (Uhm if any of my high school friends are reading this, this is a bit awkward. I bet you're one of the few exceptions to this!). However in varsity there are literally THOUSANDS of potential friends, all just hanging out at Imperium (Shoutout to Kovsies), all with different interests, studying different degrees and from pretty much all over the world. And unlike school you won't be meeting up with your friends at the movies, you'll be meeting up with them for a jol at Origin (Shoutout to UKZN)!
4. LIFESTYLE
For the first time ever you're going to have to deal with communal showers (Make sure you have your plakkies ready). You're also going to have to get used to not having any privacy at all, ever. You're gonna have your res mate barge into your room at 3am to borrow a stapler or at 5am for a drunk heart-to-heart. The worst part is that they're not even going to knock. Another thing you deal with everyday is an insane amount of walking, even just that walk to the jammie stop (Shoutout to UCT) is gonna feel like the comrades. But don't get too excited, that won't help you escape first year syndrome. You'll somehow still find a way to put on that extra 5kgs even though you're broke as hell. Why is student life so contradictory?
Which do you think is better - school or university? Drop me a comment yo! I'd say overall even though school life had loads of luxuries you won't get in uni, your varsity years are really the most awesome years ever and you should make the most of them. One thing's for sure, whether you're in school or uni you're gonna feel like this most of the time!
Funny post :) Brings back good memories
