THE WOMEN WHO (LITERALLY) RULE THE WORLD

When you think of politics you usually think of old, balding men and while this is (unfortunately) mostly true, there are tons of women that are proving to pack quite a punch! In celebration of Women's Day, I researched Forbes list of 100 Most Powerful Women to find the women in politics who are changing the world one election at a time.

GOT NO TIME FOR TERRORISM BRO

By Jayd Wollentine

In the age of insurgencies and infestation by extremist groups such as Daesh, Al-Shabaab, and others, nations around the world have had to resort to waiting until they become victims of a terrorist attack, and conducting retaliatory strikes against terror strongholds.

MELANIA, KEEP ON SLAPPING TRUMP'S HAND

Written by Indira Midha

If I could say just two words to Donald Trump, they would be “YOU'RE,” and “FIRED.” As a citizen of the United States of America, I am saddened by the state in which our country’s political atmosphere currently sits. An unqualified, disrespectful person holds the highest power over the government of this country. America, our president is somebody who mocked a journalist with a physical disability, and used the journalist’s disability as a reason to question their intelligence. America, our vice president is somebody who believes that you can electrocute the gay out of teenagers. What happened to “the land of the free, and the home of the brave?” These are words pulled from The Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem: an extremely traditional, and valuable song. This country is meant to be a place in which human beings can simply exist as human beings, and attempt to positively contribute to society.

HOW TO SLAY - NAMIBIAN STYLE

Monday, the 15th of May, was a big day for me - the day I could finally stop cringing when someone asked for my age and I had to end if off with "teen". I'm finally a twenty something (well twenty nothing technically). Cool, right? Tbh it's actually a pretty big deal for me. My excuse for everything in life up until that point was "I'm so young, it doesn't matter". Guess what Asha, it kinda matters now. I mean I'm still so young (I can't even legally drink in half of the world!), but now I don't feel like that excuse is valid anymore. I have no excuse not to have adventures. I have no excuse not to learn more. I have no excuse not to love more. I have no excuse not to get my shit together.

And most importantly, I have no excuse not to slay! This week one of the greatest Slay Queens if my life, has graced us with the ultimate guide to slaying - whether you're 20, 30 or even 102 (Yeah, we're gonna be bomb ass grandmas one day)!

LET'S GET HIGH IN THE PHILIPPINES (JK, PLEASE DON'T)

Happy belated World Press Freedom Day! World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. Speaking of Windhoek (No, not the beer!), we might be having a blog post about Namibia soon (Yes Elina, I'm looking at you). So often we take Freedom of Press for granted when so many journalists all around the world are being imprisoned and losing their lives for simply recovering the truth. Why are our voices still being silenced?  Did you know that Al Jazeera journalist, Mahmoud Hussein, has been detained in Eqypt for 141 days and counting? Yeah, that shizz actually happens in real life.

Anyway, it's time to get to this weeks blog post. We're still doing the guest post series where anyone who isn't Asha Singh can contribute to the blog (*sigh* I miss writing for you guys!). For this weeks opinion piece, we go abroad to a country I know very little about apart from the fact that it's definitely #travelgoals - the Philippines.

SOUTH AFRICA THIS IS WHO OUR NEXT PRESIDENT SHOULD BE (HINT: NOT ZUMA)

As a first year computer science major would say, Hello World. And more importantly, Hello May (My birthday month eeep!). This month we've got something exciting coming to LBAS (Because having an acronym makes me feel like I made it in life). Every week I'm going to publish an opinion piece written by a reader/friend/fellow blogger. These posts are a way to gain insight from different people, and remind us that my voice isn't the only one you should listen to for your weekly, worldly news update (And also because I'm too lazy to come up with new stuff after that long weekend tbh). So sit back, relax and enjoy a different take on LIFE (This time not by Asha Singh *sigh*).

HOW TO BREAK UP WITH HIM/HER (AND THE FRENCH ELECTION)

There comes a time when the initial honeymoon stage of the relationship ends (*sigh* it was nice while it lasted). Before you know it, the days of romantic dates, going out to restaurants with names you can't pronounce, getting bouquets of roses and chocolates and being treated like a Queen/King fade into a distant memory. That's when you know it may be time to let go. Easier said than done! The one thing harder than starting a relationship is ending one. Don't you worry, Life By Asha Singh is here to make your life easier.

SOUTH AFRICA, IS THIS THE START OF A REVOLUTION?

revolution
rɛvəˈluːʃ(ə)n/
noun
  1. a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system.

If you've spoken to a South African in the past week chances are the topic of the day has been the recent cabinet reshuffle and junk status downgrade. Both of which suck big time.

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT - TRUMP EDITION

We all have those moments where we wish we had Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility to escape the awkwardness. Whether it's waving at someone you thought was waving at you but was actually just waving at the person behind you or pulling a door that says push or even when the waiter says enjoy your meal and you say "Thanks, you too!" (So much awkwardness, I can't deal!).

WHAT FEMINISTS DO FOR FUN

When we're not out fighting for the rights of minority groups all over the world we have normal lives like you. This is an inside look at what our friendly neighbourhood feminists do for fun on weekends.

A (SLIGHTLY TIPSY) TAKE ON SOUTH AFRICA'S BUDGET SPEECH

Now I promise you I am 100% sober writing this, however you might not be for very long. Lets play a drinking game (Happy hour anybody?). Everytime I mention something negative about South Africa's future prospects based on the Budget Speech we'll both take a shot.

WHY I LOVE MUSLIMS

With recent events such as President Donald J. Trump's "muslim ban" there have been lots of negativity from the western world towards followers of Islam. Our generation prides itself on being all about radiating them good vibes, so I thought I would share with you some of my favourite things about the Muslim (Particularly Arab) culture.
