MONEY, MONEY, MONEY (INVESTING AND THIS WEEK'S STOCK MARKET TURMOIL)

On the blog I tend to talk about touchy subjects like politics, social justice and even feminism, so it's only natural for me to want to talk about money. I've divided this blog post into 2 parts - the first part deals with what's currently happening in the stock market and especially this weeks stock market turmoil. The second part deals with my personal take on investing and money.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert on the topic of money and the economy, and my knowledge is limited to second year economics modules (Which I did get distinctions in just BTW ;)).

A DUMMIES GUIDE TO DAY ZERO AND CAPE TOWN'S WATER CRISIS

UPDATE: DAY ZERO has been moved to 11 May due to more people, farms in particular, following the water restrictions. YAY! This is amazing news because Cape Town's rainy season starts in the winter months (June, July, August) and this will hopefully mean the rainy season starts in time. There is, however, no certainty around whether Cape Town will actually receive enough rainfall during the "rainy season" to make up for the 3 year drought.

I hated geography in high school. No, like really hated it. Geography class made me want to jump off the nearest bridge (My geo class was on the 4th floor so I might as well have jumped out the window tbh).

SOUTH AFRICA THIS IS WHO OUR NEXT PRESIDENT SHOULD BE (HINT: NOT ZUMA)

As a first year computer science major would say, Hello World. And more importantly, Hello May (My birthday month eeep!). This month we've got something exciting coming to LBAS (Because having an acronym makes me feel like I made it in life). Every week I'm going to publish an opinion piece written by a reader/friend/fellow blogger. These posts are a way to gain insight from different people, and remind us that my voice isn't the only one you should listen to for your weekly, worldly news update (And also because I'm too lazy to come up with new stuff after that long weekend tbh). So sit back, relax and enjoy a different take on LIFE (This time not by Asha Singh *sigh*).

SOUTH AFRICA, IS THIS THE START OF A REVOLUTION?

revolution
rɛvəˈluːʃ(ə)n/
noun
  1. a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system.

If you've spoken to a South African in the past week chances are the topic of the day has been the recent cabinet reshuffle and junk status downgrade. Both of which suck big time.

VARSITY VS. SCHOOL

Broke, hungry and tired - 3 words that are practically synonymous with student life. In university you'll have to deal with eating noodles everyday, having your socks continuously getting stolen and being so hungover that you'd rather just die right there and then.  At times like these you'll reminisce over the good old school days when everything was so much easier. But was life really better? Here's the good, bad and the ugly on how student life compares to scholar life.

A (SLIGHTLY TIPSY) TAKE ON SOUTH AFRICA'S BUDGET SPEECH

Now I promise you I am 100% sober writing this, however you might not be for very long. Lets play a drinking game (Happy hour anybody?). Everytime I mention something negative about South Africa's future prospects based on the Budget Speech we'll both take a shot.

WHY I HATE AIRPORTS BUT LOVE ROAD TRIPS

Ironically I'm sitting at departures at an airport while I write this post, but this reinforces why I would much rather be in a car with my best friends having a road trip right now.
