After a magical time exploring the natural beauty of De Hoop Nature Reserve, we took the scenic route back through the Western Cape. A quick stop in Hermanus for ocean views and fresh coffee set the tone before we arrived in the heart of the Cape Winelands, the picturesque town of Stellenbosch.
Evergreen Manor & Spa in the Heart of Stellenbosch
We checked in to Evergreen Manor & Spa, an elegant guesthouse perfectly located in the historic center of Stellenbosch. The beautifully preserved 1904 building is part of Cape Country Routes South Africa, a collection of handpicked, owner-run lodges and guesthouses known for their charm and hospitality.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, blending old-world charm with modern comforts. Traveling with a baby, we really appreciated that Evergreen had added a cot to our room ahead of our arrival, a thoughtful touch that made all the difference.
What made this stay even more special was how personally meaningful it was. I spent a year at Stellenbosch University, and Evergreen Manor is just steps away from Heemstede, the residence I once called home. Walking these familiar streets again felt like coming full circle.
A Town Full of Charm and Character
On our second day, we took time to explore the town on foot. Stellenbosch is incredibly walkable, with oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch architecture, art galleries, boutique stores, and cafés around every corner. We visited the Neelsie Student Centre, which brought back so many university memories. Even now, the energy of campus life is alive and well.
The location of Evergreen Manor really shines here with everything within walking distance. From the Stellenbosch Botanical Garden to local museums and quirky bookshops, there's no shortage of things to do in Stellenbosch for all ages.
Dinner & Wine Tasting Delights
On our first night, we had dinner at Hussar Grill, known for its classic steakhouse menu and cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect start to our stay.
The next evening, we returned to The Wine Glass, where we had visited earlier for a rainy-day wine tasting. Their dinner menu did not disappoint, offering perfectly paired small plates alongside some of the best wines the Stellenbosch wine route has to offer.
Even when the weather was gloomy, Stellenbosch was still full of experiences. The Wine Glass was a highlight. It’s ideal for sampling multiple local wines under one roof without needing to drive from one estate to another.
A Visit to Lanzerac
Once the weather cleared, we made our way to Lanzerac Wine Estate, one of the most iconic wine farms in the region. From the mountain views to the historic buildings and lush gardens, Lanzerac was an unforgettable way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Mornings at Evergreen started with a beautifully prepared breakfast featuring a spread of fresh fruit, pastries, and eggs made to order. We also had the pleasure of chatting with the owner, whose passion for hospitality and attention to detail was reflected in every part of the experience.
The guesthouse also has a spa on site, and while we didn’t book treatments this time, it’s definitely on my list for our next visit.
